Goin' Fishin'

It’s that time of year again….fishing gear packed; this year, I’ll make sure I’ve got the belt around my waders really snug so I don’t catch fish inside the pants instead of on the reel if I fall into the river again.  Fly fishing is like Zen….like a mantra, I caste my rod and watch how gracefully (and sometimes not so gracefully) the fly just drops down upon the water’s surface.  Sometimes, I get lucky and a fish grabs the fly.  I practice ‘catch and release’ so there is no harm to the fish…it’s sport.  Mother Nature gives us joy, peace and pleasure; nothing like standing hip-deep in a beautiful surrounding.

All that being said, it is important for all of us to give back to Mother Nature for all she bestows upon us.  I am a member of Trout Unlimited, which is a non profit organization dedicated to the preservation of our beautiful rivers and streams and fish.  Tomorrow, before we say ‘tight lines’ to one another and go to our own private Idahos to fish, we will plant over 200 small trees along the Beaverkill in upstate New York.  This small act by a group of us will help to preserve one of the finest trout fishing meccas in the world for years to come.

Spring has arrived and we all want to enjoy the great outdoors…think of how you can give back to Mother Nature….even if it’s as simple as picking up a stray soda can on the side of a lake, river or favorite running path.  Happy Weekend and ‘tight lines’ to all my fishing friends out there!
