Don't Slack Off During The Holidays

It’s that time of year….holiday parties, big meals, more alcohol, and all those cookies your co-workers insist you taste.  Everywhere you turn, there’s a booby trap waiting to undo all that diet, exercise and therapeutic care you’ve spent much time and good money all year long to keep up good health.  Since most people are not angels or saints, here are a few tips to keep you on course during the next few weeks:

  • stay with clean eating for breakfast and lunch.  Beginning your day on the right track will prevent sugar and energy spikes during the daytime hours.  This will also make you think twice about ‘just giving up’ for the next few weeks.
  • Don’t be a guinea pig for those office/relative’s baking nightmares.  Unless a person is a semi-professional baker, dollars-to-donuts they bake once per year at holiday time.  Less than amazing is a waste of time and calories (and one less stomach ache).  If you’d like a sweet, go to a good pastry shop, sit down, and enjoy your sweet.  It will be professionally prepared and worth the caloric intake.  Even better, go with a friend or co-worker and share something incredible…half the calories and just as satisfying.  You’re not a garbage can, so don’t eat garbage.
  • Start the holiday cheer with a club soda, afterward, if you’re still in the mood for a cocktail, enjoy it but don’t overdo it.  Drink (1) 8oz glass of water in between your cocktails.  This will fill you up and your evening will be cheaper and you won’t wake up with headache from hell.
  • Stop the Stress!!!  Stress is a killer, it taxes the immune system, it wears on your heart, it increases your blood pressure and will put you into a state of ‘fight or flight’, which will cause you to hold onto every single ounce you intake.  You’ll arrive at your destination when you get there.  If you don’t have money for gifts, buy a card and scribe something meaningful, or make a card (please don’t do your ‘bake once per year’).  This will be more appreciated.
  • Don’t  be forced into socializing with toxic people.  It doesn’t matter if they are ‘blood’…..if they’re toxic, they’re poison and you are under no obligation to subject yourself to their organic pollution.  Put the big boy/girl panties on and stand up for what you believe.  If a toxic person is at a party, be polite, say hello and go to the other side of the room.  Don’t waste your time or intelligence ….they’re just not worth it.
  • Laugh and have fun!  It’s all about joy….if you’re not in the mood, that’s ok, but think and reflect on what you are grateful for – a roof over your head, one true friend, the food on your table, or good health.  Reach out and tell someone how much he or she means to you…that’s the true Christmas/holiday spirit.  Donate a meal to a homeless shelter or dog shelter.

Share these tips with others and pay it forward!  If you’re at your wit’s end, schedule an appointment for a de-stressing session….you KNOW you’re not leaving my office without a laugh….that’s against the rules here at my clinic!  Stay tuned for more healthy tips!
