Valerie Harper recently revealed in an interview with AARP Magazine (March 2015 Issue), that she had been receiving acupuncture regularly and drinking teas her acupuncturist was giving her as adjunctive therapy for the cancer she was battling. After a while, she stopped her regular acupuncture treatments and stopped drinking her teas for a month – and landed in the hospital emergency room where tests showed enhanced levels of protein. Her doctors told her ‘whatever you were doing, don’t stop!” So, Ms. Harper went back to her regularly scheduled acupuncture sessions and teas and has been living her life fully and happily; treasuring each and every day given to her.
Acupuncture and herbal teas (when administered by an acupuncturist trained in oncology) can make a significant difference in the cancer patient’s life. Quite often, an oncologist might not be comfortable with herbal teas because of possible contraindications with chemo drugs…one must respect this. That being said, acupuncture alone (again…administered by an acupuncturist trained in oncology) can eliminate the nausea, dry mouth, insomnia, nervousness, itchy palms and soles of feet and other side effects of the radiation and chemotherapy.
